AO PSYCHOLOGY / PROFESSIONAL REPORTS

Purposeful professional reports, grounded in the information available.

A good report should answer a clear question, not simply fill pages. AO Psychology prepares suitable counselling summaries and selected psychosocial reports using the information available. We’ll discuss what the report is needed for, what can reasonably be included, the cost and any limitations before work begins. Read about our professional scope and reporting limits.

WHAT IS A PROFESSIONAL COUNSELLING REPORT?

Useful information, documented with care.

A counselling report brings together information for an agreed purpose. Depending on the request, it may cover attendance, reasons for seeking support, counselling goals, work completed, observed progress and suitable recommendations. We include only information the practitioner can responsibly support.

Reports are prepared with attention to the reason for the request, what information is available and how it may be shared. We first clarify the intended reader—such as a client, solicitor, treating practitioner or support coordinator—so the document is focused and useful.

PROFESSIONAL DOCUMENTATION

Written for a clear purpose.

The value of a professional report is its relevance to the question being asked, its clear presentation of supported information and its appropriate professional boundaries. We establish the intended purpose, recipient and required scope before confirming the work.

Reports may involve a summary of existing counselling work or a separate enquiry about psychosocial information, subject to suitability and professional review.

TWO REPORT PATHWAYS

Choose the starting point that fits your situation.

A report must fit its purpose and the information available. Existing clients may request a counselling summary; other questions may require a separate consultation. Neither option replaces specialist diagnosis, medico-legal evaluation or a statutory assessment beyond the practitioner's competence.

THE VALUE OF A PROFESSIONAL REPORT

What makes the documentation useful.

A credible report does more than repeat a client's concerns. It responds to a defined request, distinguishes the information available from professional observations and makes the limits of its conclusions clear.

01 / PURPOSE

An agreed question and audience

We clarify the reason for the document, who will receive it, and what the available counselling work or consultation can reasonably address.

02 / BASIS

Evidence and professional boundaries

Content is based on available records, relevant self-report and appropriately supported observations, with uncertainties and limitations explained.

03 / UTILITY

Relevant findings and next steps

Where appropriate, the report brings together therapeutic engagement, functional impact, progress and recommendations relevant to its intended use.

A counselling or psychosocial report is not a psychological diagnostic assessment, independent forensic opinion or guarantee that a third party will accept the document. Scope, consent, recipients, cost and suitability are agreed before work begins.

HOW THE PROCESS WORKS

First, let’s understand what the report is for.

  1. 01

    Tell us the purpose

Let us know why the report is needed, who will read it and any requested questions or deadlines.

  2. 02

    Confirm suitability

We review whether the work falls within the available information and relevant professional competence.

  3. 03

    Agree on scope & fee

We outline the proposed process, required consultations or records, timeframes and price.

  4. 04

    Prepare & share

Following appropriate consent and review, the report is prepared and securely delivered as agreed.

WHAT MAY BE INCLUDED?

Relevant information, a clear structure and accountable limits.

The contents depend on the report's purpose and the information that can responsibly be supported. A professional counselling summary might include:

COMMON QUESTIONS

Important details, explained simply.

Can I request a report if I've never attended counselling with AO Psychology?

You can enquire about a standalone consultation. We first assess the purpose and information required to determine whether a suitable psychosocial or counselling report can be prepared.

Does every report require a new appointment?

Not necessarily. For an existing client, the relevant counselling record may support a requested treatment summary. Additional consultation or review time may be needed depending on the purpose.

Can a solicitor request the report for me?

Yes, legal representatives may enquire about an appropriate report. We clarify the request, consent, intended recipient and the professional scope before accepting work.

Can a report be used as expert evidence in court?

A counselling report may be used in legal processes where appropriate, but courts determine admissibility and weight. Specialist independent expert forensic assessments are a separate service category.

How much does a written report cost?

The fee depends on the purpose, records, consultations and writing involved. We provide a clear quote before proceeding.

What if I only need an attendance letter?

Tell us the required dates and intended recipient. We can discuss whether a brief attendance confirmation is appropriate, without commissioning a comprehensive report.

ENQUIRE BEFORE BOOKING

Tell us what documentation you need.

Explain the report’s purpose and intended recipient. We can advise whether a counselling summary or appropriately scoped consultation is suitable and what information and fee would be required.
